In 1874, the Flower Mission became the Association’s first co-ordinated volunteer drive and it was formed to bring the beauty and scent of fresh flowers to people who were ill or isolated in hospitals or their own homes. This was the start of the Association’s drive to show that people cared about them and that they were committed to building an ongoing relationship with them. It was also a recognition of the power of small gestures, alongside the more financial and work-related programmes.
